Lyrics for
Jonah!

Wendy James

The Lord said to Jonah,
“Go the Ninevah today,
For the people there are wicked
On their knees they need to pray.”
But Jonah was so very scared
Of what they’d do to him
That he hopped on board a sailing ship
And went off on a whim!

Chorus:
“ Jonah, Jonah go to Ninevah
Jonah, Jonah go to Ninevah
Jonah, go to Ninevah today.”

“Oh, Lord, oh, Lord,
I’m not gonna go, I’m not gonna go!
Oh, Lord, oh, Lord,
You can’t make me go,
You can’t make me go - - oh!”

Well, the Lord said to Jonah,
“This will never, never do.”
So he caused a mighty wind to come
and beat the boat in two.
Well, the sailors on the ship
Didn’t like this very much.
So they all grabbed onto Jonah
And they send him out to lunch.

Chorus

Well a fish went, “Gulp!”
And swallowed Jonah whole
Then Jonah went, “Gulp!
I’m in the belly of a whale!”
Three days, three nights
Jonah prayed, Jonah prayed
Three days, three nights
In that belly Jonah stayed.
Poor fish got a belly-ache
From a man named Jonah
Who was swallowed from the lake.

“Jonah, Jonah go to Ninevah
Jonah, Jonah go to Ninevah
Jonah, go to Ninevah today.”
“Oh, Lord, oh, Lord,
Yes, I’ll go, yes, I’ll go!
Oh, Lord, oh, Lord,
I want to go,
I want to go - - oh!”

So the Lord made the fish
Cough up Jonah onto land
And down in the town of Ninevah
Ol’ Jonah took his stand.
It’s the moral of our story
If the Lord says, “Go!”
Don’t you ever, ever, ever, ever, ever say, “No!”
